making the best of it
So I was trying to explain to a friend why I was upset that the Underworld franchise seems to have killed off the character Michael (and hooked Selene up with a new boy-toy or two). See, for most of us who are not males aged thirteen to twenty-five (and probably even some who are) the romance between the two surviving characters was what drove the first movie, that and the amazing jobs done by the supporting cast and writing staff.

DRF: It's like if Doctor Who, I don't know, painted flames on the TARDIS, shot River in the head decided to drop all the quirky speech and one-liners and solved EVERY problem by either firing phasers or seducing hte alien princess.
Picture Doc as Kirk [buddy's name]. PICTURE DOC AS KIRK.

BUDDY: ...I caan't.

DRF: Wait! That's it! It's that Undeworld won me over with emotional resonance and great writing, but LATER switched to action and ass shots only. It's as if Doc Who became Star Trek!

Star Trek isn't bad, it's just different.

I like this analogy.
